Operable doors and windows and doors provide fresh air ventilation off a newly created interior courtyard space.

The entry to the 1953 midcentury ranch was reworked by Boyer. To the left, the popped-out window box contains a built-in bench which is part of the home office nook.

The entrance is an artistic mix of midcentury lines and features globe pendant lighting.

The entryway of the home is characterized not only by the red front door, but also by the large panels of glass on either side, including one that almost disappears, allowing the planting box to appear to continue seamlessly into the interior.

The sandstone flooring continues inside, as does the wall-hung bench, for a seamless look. The new white oak front door was custom-designed by Miles Woofter, and built and carved by Chuck Newport, the builder on the project. Glass on two sides brings plentiful natural light inside and better sight lines between inside and out.

The height of oversized doors can be offset or accentuated with long hardware.

This midcentury home, originally owned by a local illustrator, needed updating, remodeling, and fortifying. Seattle-based SHED Architecture & Design tackled the project, keeping some classic features while updating others, like the front door in a semi-gloss orange.

"If you had to quarantine, it’s the best place to do it," says Jobe. "You have a connection to the outdoors, you’re comfortable with air and light. It’s impossible not to think about spaces in these terms now—how the places we’re living and working can keep us safe."

The architects designed every gesture of the home as a complement to the landscape, including the slot windows that frame views of the surrounding foliage and the walkway that follows the bedrock of the cliff.

"The fire pit area seats four and is great for making s'mores," says Dianna.

“We took some pains to save the tree,” says Humble of the mature cherry tree that was preserved in the redevelopment. “We used it to focus all of our new openings.”

The infinity pool seems to stretch into lush views.

"To accentuate [the] seamless connection to the outdoors, we created a pair of retractable glass walls that meet at the corner. The effect when open is one of completely dissolving the corner and creating a feeling of being surrounded by nature," describes Maniscalco.
