The designers removed extraneous elements added by others in the ’70s so that Pedersen’s striking exposed trusses could once again take center stage. They also relocated a vintage Aztec fireplace by Majestic from the den to the step-down family room and fitted it with chimney extensions from Malm Fireplaces. Homeowner John John Bhasme with his daughter. In addition to upgrading the HVAC and electrical systems, the renovation replaced the home’s dated railings, extended the back wall of the kitchen, and installed walnut cabinetry and floors throughout. The Purist faucet is by Kohler, while the refrigerator is by GE and the Onyx recessed lights are by Nora Lighting.
“It’s the essence of midcentury design to take an economical approach to making something like the open-truss ceiling striking and beautiful,” says designer Brett Halsey.
Designed by a little-known architect in 1949, the now streamlined home honors its original bones.
Of Pedersen’s trusses, Halsey adds, “That was Don’s genius move and why you can have thirteen-foot-high walls of glass.” The paint color is Burning Tomato by Dunn-Edwards.
Sliding glass doors open to the partially covered deck, which is made of Cumaru decking by Advantage Lumber.
“The project was about peeling back layers. From there, we had to be creative and utilize what the house was giving to us,” adds Levitt Halsey.

The kitchen cabinetry is from IKEA; the cabinet pulls are from Richelieu Hardware. In the spring, the family harvests maple syrup from the trees outside the window.

“The pitched ceilings and ribbon of clerestory windows make the interior feel more spacious than it is,” notes Gooden.
Acapulco chairs sit on the adjacent deck. The windows are by Milgard and the glass sliders are by Western Window Systems.
The bedroom furniture is from West Elm and the duvet is from Virgil Abloh’s Markerad collection for IKEA.
The side patio doubles as a parking spot for a custom-built 1970 Honda CB750.
A red Womb chair from Knoll adds a bright touch to the otherwise neutral palette.
In the kitchen, Eames chairs flank a custom dining table, and the pendant is by Wever & Ducré.
“The approval process wasn’t easy. It’s just a guesthouse, but we may as well have been trying to build an apartment complex in the backyard,” says Marks. Walls of board-formed concrete are warmed by the cumaru wood ceilings and decks.
Rather than expand their midcentury home, Anthony Marks and his partner built a guesthouse on the unused half of their double lot, in Denton, Texas. The gated fence borrows from the material palette used for the dwelling. “It’s like an introduction, or preview, to what lies beyond,” says architect Michael Gooden.

Architect David Dowell and his wife, Kathy, took a decade to determine what they wanted to do with the historic 12-acre property they bought in eastern Kansas. The couple eventually opted to renovate and expand the modest limestone cottage that was already there. The resulting 1,250-square-foot getaway sits on the rolling plain amid elm, silver maple, and eastern red cedar trees. “You don’t have to choose between old and new,” says David. “It’s a false construct in our brain to even think that way.”
