Members of Mätti and Eva’s hall share kitchen appliances and household tools. Their group also includes nonresident members, known colloquially as “free-floaters,” who rent work spaces.
Many full-time residents of the large, C-shaped hall constructed their “roll towers” using wood panels, steel structural frames, and glass windows or fabric curtains. “People were free to use the material they liked,” says Mätti.
In an affordable housing complex in Zurich, Mätti Wüthrich, Eva Maria Küpfer, Alex Popert, Gaba Lopes, and Katharina Riedl live in movable structures inside an open communal space called a “hall.” An arrangement traditionally found in squats, their home is the first legal example of hall living in Switzerland.
The east side of the house—the secondary residence—is set back from the master bedroom in the primary residence so that it has direct sunrise views through corner glazing.
The oak cabinet in the living room was another secondhand find. “It had the exact measurements of the wall,” says Annemie. “We just needed to hang it.” The throw blanket is from La Femme Garniture while the pillows and pendants are custom.

Oliver and Sara Fritsch’s Mount Hood getaway—not far from Mount Hood Meadows, one of the largest ski resorts in Oregon—is tall and skinny, reminiscent of the canal houses in Amsterdam, where the Fritsch family lived for three years. Also notable is the facade, painted in a custom shade of soft black. Inside, the house is arranged in a reverse layout, with the open living space located at the top.
"There are various dining sets around the houses, so we can choose one that is best protected from the wind or sun," says Aleksi.
