Owners Jill and Toby Gebben went on their first date by the shores of Lake Michigan, and long dreamed of building their own lakeside cottage.

A cast-iron tub from Signature Hardware sits beneath a large window; the unlacquered brass faucet is from Waterworks.

Bamboo bathroom caddies from Muji complement a leather-bound mirror by Jacques Adnet for Gubi. In keeping with the home’s old-new dynamic, a 1920s vintage Kohler sink is furnished with a brushed gold faucet from Kohler’s Purist Collection. “The process of remodeling reflected a discovery, a real blending,” says Jennifer.

The living room is warmed by a Morsø 1440 cast-iron stove and features a pair of calfskin folding seats that are original to the house.

Tasked by John Powers and Jennifer Bostic with renovating a run-down cottage that was never meant to be lived in year round, Otto Ruano of Lead Studios transformed the space while keeping as much of it intact as possible. Before: The back deck had a long integrated bench that wasn't very conducive or comfortable for social gatherings.

Replacing a door, the new bookshelf window provides storage while still allowing daylight to enter the office.

Both renovated bathrooms are outfitted with new Heath Cermics tile.

After considering concrete floors, the homeowners and Wilson decided on ceramic tile for a more natural but still durable, low-maintenance ease.

The renovated dining area is clad with the house's original cedar panels, which were re-milled.

Before renovation, the living-dining area felt cramped, in part because of a TV and small entertainment center wedged between these spaces.

The old kitchen felt cramped because of its lowered ceilings, which were addressed in the subsequent renovation.

The 1,400-square-foot house could not be expanded beyond its original footprint, but the owners appreciated its relative modesty in choosing not to add a second story.

Homeowners Jamie and Cleo eschewed the option to add a second story, as their neighbor had chosen, instead doubling down on their "jewel box."

The original house was U-shaped around a small courtyard, but later expanded into the courtyard to create a new living room.

The new master bedroom includes a bay window protruding outward from the original facade, making a window seat that frames a view of shore pines and the dunes.

The old master bedroom still had its original 1940s Douglas fir panels, but also lacked light.

Relocating the kitchen to the southeast corner and removing a wall helped not only connect it to the rest of the house, but created a more cinematic view of the nearby wetlands.

The remodeled kitchen offers a whole corner of glass, and continues as a backsplash beneath the new cabinetry.
