Eric built a custom bookshelf for one side of the room, using the salvaged kitchen cabinets for the base and adding an arched detail that extends across the ceiling.
The counters are Italian marble, called Arabescato Orobico Grigio, which reminds the couple of aerial views of the Southwest. The cabinets are painted 'Miami Parasol' from Backdrop paint.
Local artist John Bisbee created a decorative screen out of nails for the end of the base cabinet. Stuart built the drawers using traditional wood-on-wood slides and proportionally spaced dovetails, which operate differently in summer and winter. “Those idiosyncrasies effect the way you interact with it,” Stuart notes. “The kitchen is experiential in that way.”
Yuan added skylights throughout the house to bring more light into the interior, including this one over the central island, which also has pendants by In Common With. The floors are by D’Hanis Terracotta Tile.
"On our first site visit, the client showed us a large Welsh dresser which was used for display. While we couldn’t find room for it in the lower ground floor, we did manage to reinterpret it’s functionality as a wall of oak shelving used for storage and display.
The pen shelving keeps the kitchen light and bright, which was the goal of its design. The kitchen and bath fixtures cost about $26,000.
Thoughtful touches, like a built-in desk and extra storage in one of the lower-level bedrooms, abound throughout the house. The wardrobe door pulls are an Etsy find from My Home & Me.
New white oak stairs connect the upper and lower floors. The homeowner wanted the downstairs apartment for visits from her daughter and young grandchildren, who live in California. La Cantina sliding doors provide easy access to the backyard.
The primary bathroom is tranquil, with soft blue tile from Fireclay complemented by Carrara marble countertops. The scones are the Mini Glo-Ball from FLOS.
In the primary suite, a new laundry niche sits outside the bathroom, where a Carrara marble counter and backsplash top a custom white-oak floating vanity. Fireclay tile in Morning Thaw—a soft powdery blue—adds cheerful color to the room and balances the gray porcelain used for the floor.
We felt more freedom then to make the kitchen fit but do it the way we needed to do it with a lot of comfort.
A Pastille Collection sofa by Hlynur Atlason joins a Tricolor LC4 Chaise Lounge by Cassina, both from DWR. The black marble-and-rebar coffee table is from Hay. Next to the staircase is a 19th-century Japanese samurai suit of armor. A Noguchi Akari pendant hangs from the 14-foot ceiling.
Shahane enlarged the ensuite bathroom, co-opting closet space from the other bedroom to do so, and carved out more closet space.
Glass folding doors from Panoramic Doors reach nine-and-a-half feet high to open the kitchen to the courtyard. “It's such a unique feature, especially in Brooklyn,” says Slocum. “You rarely ever see that type of thing.”
A brick hearth designed by Winter was updated with a gas fireplace. The couple redid the kitchen without enlarging it, in an effort to stay true to Winter’s plan. “We were trying to do a modern version of what would feel right in a house designed in the ’70s,” explains Rick.

Stairs lead from the street to the decked entry garden, where Roberta grows herbs she cooks with. The glass door leads into the kitchen. A Koko dining table and Gigi dining chairs are from Janus et Cie.
The lights are naval outdoor switches that come from Ed’s father, who stumbled across them in a box: “They’ve got a really satisfying ‘click’ to them,” Ed says.
Ed learned to build through first working on a home in Cornwall. Drawing from the Segal method, a self-build approach popular with timber-frame spaces, the design later inspired Ed’s garden retreat.
The living area where the kids gather features large windows for forest views in multiple directions.

A pony wall was removed from one end of the dining room and replaced with a built-in bench and slatted-railing. The original casework used to extend across the length of the dining room, but Daniel and Sandy removed a strip and reconfigured it into stacked cabinets.
The architects used natural materials and colors in the kitchen to make the space feel serene, expansive, and connected to the outdoors.
