The kitchen was moved from a small space off the hallway and is now adjacent to the living area. The duck blue surfaces were made to match the floor tiling.
Stowing the queen-size Room Makers Murphy bed by SICO frees up access to custom built-in cabinets and pull-down closet rods by Hafele that illuminate when the door is opened.
Like much of the Italian Riviera, La Spezia on the Ligurian coast has a long maritime history. It was precisely this seafaring legacy that inspired the design of this tiny home, a 377-square-feet apartment that was reconfigured to clearly separate the living and sleeping areas. A cabinetry wall is constructed with marine plywood.
A birch folding shelf, situated between the bedroom area and the kitchen, is where Mariah eats, prepares food, or works.

Monica’s side is more static so she can organize her drawings and work supplies.
Glulam Douglas fir beams and Marvin Ultimate windows define the treetop kitchen. The windows were selected for their ability to blend with the timber structure, creating what architect Gabe Hodge calls “openings in the walls, rather than windows.”
In the double-height living space, Marvin windows stretch nearly floor to ceiling, capturing light even on rainy days and offering panoramic views across the forest. The Douglas fir frame remains exposed throughout, adding warmth, continuity, and rhythm.
At the top of the stair hall, a generous custom Marvin window frames views of the forest beyond, inviting light deep into the home. The black-stained vertical timber panelling contrasts with the warmth of the Douglas fir, while the wood frame of the Marvin Ultimate collection echoes the forested landscape.
The stair hall creates a natural flow from the lower level to the airy upper volume. “Especially for the first time, it creates a moment of revelation,” explains Gabe. “You're delivered up to the pavilion and the view of the farm through the trees.”
In Jenn’s office, tucked beside the stair hall, the walls stop short of the ceiling, allowing the timber roof to remain uninterrupted above. “We talked a lot about how she wanted the space to feel,” says architect Gabe Hodge. “She placed a lot of value on how beautiful this roof was going to be.” The resulting design preserves acoustic and visual connection to the rest of the home, with small interior apertures that keep the space visually tethered to the landscape and the wider home.
Inside the timber volume, living spaces unfold with long views through the trees—which are enjoyed by both the family and the family dog, Aspen. The elevation draws in northern light and allows the residents to feel immersed in the seasons without sacrificing comfort.
The contemporary, minimalist design is constructed almost entirely out of solid wood.
Fireclay Peabody tile covers the bathroom, with Luminaire Authentik Norvégienne sconces, Rubinet faucets, and Pottery Barn medicine cabinets.
The door to the left was added in the remodel, to increase air flow and facilitate better circulation for groups. The threshold is painted green, in a nod to an image seen in the Barbican Residents: Inside the Iconic Brutalist Estate. The wall oven are by Bosch.
Luminaire Authentik Nomad pendants hang over the new island, with an antique family hutch acting as storage against the wall.
"I like to collect. We keep flat files in the basement," says Felipe. Many of those posters became the artwork throughout the guest suite.

The primary bathroom has a large walk-in shower that can easily fit a walker or wheelchair. Green Centura tile covers the floors, while white subway tile is from Olympia Tile (leftover from former jobs at Ben Homes). The latter is also used in the kitchen and at the bar.
The walls throughout, including the primary suite here, are covered in vertical grain hemlock, which, at the time of construction, "was a little more affordable

A modest kitchen is tucked at one end of the great room, illuminated not only by two walls of glass but a pair of skylights above.
Remo and Emi started with a feeling—calm, cozy, and simple—and went from there, outfitting the space with white limewash paint, maple plywood built-ins, and green textiles and tile.
“Everything is in the core,” Farley says. “It’s an efficient way to organize space and functions.
Remo Kommnick and Emi Moore wanted a minimalist home that could blend with its site in rural Virginia. “We had to keep things really simple,” says architect Patrick Farley. The cabin is clad in stained western red cedar, and its form is inspired by shelters on the nearby Appalachian Trail.
The common spaces in the Suteki House deliberately frame exterior views. "The beautiful oak trees on the opposite side of the creek are still ‘belonging’ to this house by the use of shakkei, which expands limits visually," explain the architects.
Rock climbing walls and monkey bars are popular features in many custom kids’ playrooms.
