Louvered windows in the kitchen and bathroom provide natural ventilation. The floor and countertop have a natural, organic texture to them that ensures the space feels homey and modern rather than cold and clinical.

Completed in 2018 on a 2.6-acre site in the San Juan Islands, the two-bedroom modular home was installed in a day.

"[The bookshelf] is the centerpiece of the loft," says Colas. "From the moment you enter, you are surrounded by books, and given every opportunity to stay and get lost in one of them."

Architect Gustavo Costa calls the home library the “project’s heart.” This central space houses the owner’s expansive collection of about 5,000 books, and acts as a meeting place for friends and colleagues. A Gerrit Thomas Rietveld Red and Blue chair completes the space.

Facing another courtyard, an office nook features a Caesarstone countertop and walnut built-ins by Austin Wood Work.

ANACAPA Architecture designed Minimalist Urban Residence with California's temperate climate in mind. Radiant heat cement floors that extend into the study keep the home warm on cooler days.

Full-height sliding glass doors enable indoor/outdoor living.

The architect used horizontal slats for privacy, but alternated them on the fence and second-floor deck to allow sunlight and breezes through. Solar panels atop the roof heat the water; a green roof is in the process of growing in. The project was awarded Green Renovation of the Year and Best Housing Detail at the 2009 Ottawa Housing Design Awards.

The carport leaves the vehicles it shelters partially exposed to the elements but encourages a southeast breeze to flow through, keeping the spaces cool.
