Colored tiles in the shower are revealed behind a cedar wood wall. "The sound of falling water on wood and the surrounding fields form the background," say the architects. "This was our way of introducing an immaterial idea of what luxury actually could be about."

Dishes rest atop a shelf made from a type of textured lumber typically used for framing. The horizontal tile behind the shelf echoes the pattern and proportion of the bricks used in the hearth.

Michelle and Cameron did nearly all of the work themselves, which was often a learning experience. "We had to be willing to roll with the punches. A dimple in the concrete counter isn’t a mistake—it adds character," she says. "When people visit our house it tells them a story, and I think we all respond to that."

Builder Luke Gilligan of Gilligan Development used reclaimed oak planks from a deconstructed barn to create this modern bathroom vanity’s rustic millwork. To achieve the rugged look, he sanded and wire-brushed the wood, then applied a clear stain. The sinks are from Duravit’s Vero line and the cabinet pulls are from Top Knobs.

Misra notes that in the master bath, “Elizabeth and Edgar wanted a muted palette.” This was achieved with white subway tile and a smaller brown tile from Interceramic that echoed the larger-scale tile. “We saw the little Jasper Morrison ball lights in London and then couldn’t find them again,” says Lyall. “We finally came across them at a store on Melrose in LA, and bought them after obsessing over them for awhile.” The fixtures are by Rohl; the sink is from Duravit.

Amy: It was important for me to have a master bathroom that fostered a serene and relaxed feeling and Chris insisted that we add a little color therapy for those long, dark winter days. The floor and wall tile is by DalTile. The sink is cast concrete with a faucet by Danze.

Chris: The subfloor radiant heat tied to the Nest thermostat is one of the smartest decisions we made. We can really economize and scrutinize our energy consumption, and the heat distribution is amazing. Nothing beats stepping out on heated tile floors after your morning shower.

A creative way of cutting costs is on display in son Nate’s bathroom, where the wall tiles are arranged in a whimsical, irregular pattern making use of slim sections of tile cut for transitions and corners. “We came up with a pattern that could incorporate random sizes so we were able to order the exact amount of tile that we needed,” Bischoff says. “It allowed us to get the most out of the tile price because there wasn’t that 20 percent that [would normally go] into the landfill.” The two-bowl sink is the Vitviken model from Ikea; it’s topped with a chrome Hansgrohe faucet and accented by Ikea’s Godmorgon medicine cabinets customized by MADE.

Pavonetti designed and built the pedestal sinks using reclaimed cedar siding.
