After: The soaring new living and dining space benefits from an abundance of natural light from every side, and they spent a lot of time trying to find the best lighting for the kitchen. The final choice: long, narrow copper pendants from Denmark suspended by ultra thin wires to not disrupt the visual flow of the room.

The new kitchen features ceiling-to-countertop tiles in a grid pattern, which reappears throughout the home. The globe flush mount overhead is from Anthropologie, while the hardware is from Altas Homewares and Alno Hardware.
Custom white oak cabinetry defines the open plan kitchen, which also features a stone-topped island and breakfast nook, where Ricks and his family spend much of their time.

The interior incorporates earthy materials like salvaged teak. “You can see the landscape on either side of you,” says Hoppenot. “The rich teak walls disappear into the height of the space, and diluted natural light floods down from the skylights and in through the windows.”
“The primary building material for the project is light,” says Hoppenot. “The home has a limited materials palette that is rich in warmth and texture and allows natural light to be a main experiential material as it changes the quality of space throughout the day.”
Glass, brick, and wood converge at the home’s central volume. “The brick returns as windows allow the openings to be sunken deep into the facade,” Hoppenot shares. “The intersection of materials makes them feel like they are one.”
The home’s design unifies two extremes—light and dark, weightless and heavy.
With views of trees, sky, and water, the home’s all-glass living and dining space is enveloped by the landscape.
Architect Michael K. Chen, founder and principal of the eponymous New York–based firm, resuscitated a four-story, 3600-square-foot home that had been abandoned for 20 years by incorporating a playful color palette and interesting details, such as this oval-shaped skylight.
The doors are hung with untreated linen curtains. “Fun fact,” says Valérie. “This linen is the same linen great Dutch painters like Rembrandt used.”
The Meranti wood and glass doors are over nine feet tall, and have a custom arch detail at the top. The clay coating on the walls and ceiling are by Matteo Brioni. “We mixed some colors together to give the space a perfect warm and serene feel,” says Valérie. “We like to add the same clay finish to the ceiling as the walls to create a sense of intimacy.”
The modern vanity, which resembles a work of art, was custom-designed by JHID.
