The cabinetry was planned precisely so there’s enough floor space for a spare bed, in case this room needs to host a guest bed in a pinch.
A cedar-clad ceiling emphasizes the dramatic volumes of the combined living spaces, and the windows bring in the “dappled light” from the trees, says Rogers. The new plan makes entertaining much easier for the couple, with easy flow from the interiors to the roof deck and yard.
Custom oak storage sets the tone for the house, with the shoes stored behind the slatted door. A large window creates connection between the exterior landing and the interior foyer, as does the continuous slate flooring.
The new foyer is designed after a Japanese Genkan, and ensures the entry is clearly delineated from the rest of the house. The wood of the bottom stair forms the bench for sitting and removing shoes.
Walkways bridge over the site to disturb it as little as possible.
The addition was shifted into the trees so that it doesn’t overwhelm the site. That also gives the main living spaces a treehouse-like feel when gazing out from inside.

The homeowners loved the idea of bringing in warmth with wood details, so the team added a feature wall of clear cedar to anchor the utilitarian space. Hammer and Hand beautifully wrapped the pantry door in the same cedar for a uniform look. “They're such great craftspeople,” says Boyer of the contractor.
New custom walnut cabinetry syncs with the rest of the built-ins throughout the home, to create a pleasing rhythm in the open plan. The backsplash is Heath Ceramics tile, and the counter is Pental Quartz. Open shelves at the rear overlook a cozy den, and allow sightlines out the new windows at the front of the home.

New door and window units occupy the existing openings. There’s now a lounge space at the end of the kitchen run. Carie installed the cabinets and hired out for the waterfall marble counters.

In the living room, laminate cabinets with integrated finger pulls stow René’s belongings, while a purple-accented niche displays favorite objects (above left). A variation on the system serves as a wardrobe in the sleeping loft. Additional storage can be found in the walnut platform with side tables.

Leckie, who teamed up with Modern Organic Construction and Munzing Structural to execute the design, mostly stuck to three finishes for the two main floors: white oak, drywall, and blackened steel. Cara describes the home’s design as “quite simple—a modern Scandinavian look.”
The white oak casework, which goes from floor to ceiling throughout much of the kitchen, was fabricated by Big Branch Woodworking for $22,000.
At $6,099, the 36-inch GE Monogram refrigerator with a bottom freezer was the most expensive item in the appliance budget. The built-in piece blends flawlessly with the ample storage.

Architect Allison Reeves was renovating a townhome in Red Hook when she discovered that the existing redbrick facade was falling apart. With contractor John Fasano, she put in a new exterior of dark bricks, punctuated by a slanted pane of glass by Bieber Windows. A new roof supports a deck as well as the home's mechanicals, which the residents opted to move out of harm's way after Hurricane Sandy flooded other homes in the area.
