Designed by the original owner, the cabin was imagined as a retreat for her and her siblings' young families.
The designers were inspired by René’s upbringing in Puerto Rico, choosing Valencia tile from Fireclay to reference the colors and cobblestone streets of Old San Juan, joining it with a custom cane and wood vanity by The Build With Ethan.
The desk folds up and the installation swivels to pull down the bed.
A kitchenette with Semihandmade cabinetry, floating shelves from Shelfology, and quartz counters is tucked into an arched alcove.

Client Izabel Duval worked with designer Robert Sweet to select the interior surfaces and furniture, favoring soft tones and an array of textures.

In the living room, Two Mario Botta chairs look towards the new fireplace, a Memphis coffee table and an original leaded-glass window. The rug is designed by Faye Toogood for CC Tapis. Happy the dog sits on a sofa from Toronto’s Home Societe.
The ceiling is just cleverly-arranged particle board, but its visual impact is undeniable.

The master bedroom has a Restoration Hardware bed, wall sconces from Designer Metal Works, and a wall of windows.
A window with automated louvres at the top of the stairwell ushers in light and airflow to the bedrooms.
The study was a non-negotiable for Chloe and Chester, who split their time between their city offices and home. Chloe uses this space while Chester has taken over the second bedroom upstairs for his home office.
Chester and Chloe opted for practical vinyl upholstery in the dining nook.
With white polyurethane joinery and polished concrete floors, light bounces around the small space.
A 1960s motor court in Galveston, Texas, originally known as the Treasure Isle Motel, was reimagined as the 61-room Hotel Lucine.
Nero Marquina herringbone stone tile gives the guest bathroom a sense of weight while the ceiling, covered in reflective black acrylic, makes the small space feel infinite. The medicine cabinet is from Ikea.
“We’re always throwing events,” says Paul, so the indoor/outdoor style was a great fit for them.
A Hay sectional was chosen for their living space, beside Corbusier arm chairs beneath a projector. The rug and floor cushions were sourced from Morocco.
The master bathroom is a calming oasis of marble. The couple often relax here for a moment of tranquility.
Architect Aarne Ervi built the classic Villa Koivikko in 1958 on a lakeside just outside Helsinki. When Studio Petra Majantie and Oopeaa recently restored the building, they had to design the bathroom without the home’s original plans. They used matte-glass mosaic flooring, ceramic tiles matching the living area's hearth, and copper fixtures. High windows let in a lot of natural light, but they added undercabinet lighting and built-in cabinet lighting to create a beautiful balance.
Penny tiles in two colors cover the walls in the wet room on the second floor where wall-mounted plumbing fixtures preserve countertop space atop the solid brass sink.
"I put everything that I've always loved into this house," says Tyler—and that includes white tiles edged with gray grout in the bathroom, a design move previous clients had balked at.
New cement tile from Mosaic del Sur, Hansgrohe fixtures, a shower plate from Bette, and Farrow & Ball’s Chappell Green paint round out the room.
The clients sourced much of the furniture and appliances second-hand to reduce costs. The light above the kitchen counter, for example, is an original Sammode LED light that they found for just $160.
The design team converted the formal dining room into a unique indoor/outdoor bar. A wooden ceiling and accordion doors connect the little lounge area right to the deck when the weather’s nice, and close it off into a cozy den when the nights start to cool.
In Oakland, the weather allows for indoor/outdoor living most of the year.
