The most significant innovation is in the building envelope - 2x8 framing with sprayed cellulose insulation, plus an additional exterior wrap of rigid insulation and R-5 German-made Sorpetaler windows define the wall, while the thermal-mass slab floors are well insulated with 4 inches of rigid, wrapping to 2 inches at the stem walls.
In addition to reconstructing an open living room, Loft Szczecin had to subdivide four smaller spaces to create privacy in the expansive warehouse.
The pair painted the upstairs master bedroom white, and added a G55 sling chair and leather baskets from their recent design collections. The carpet is from a souk in Casablanca, and the bedcover is from Zara Home. Atop the vintage cup-board is an artwork by Vereecke’s father. Verheyden incorporated all-new woodwork of his design into the room.
They purchased a historic duplex and bracketed it with two new houses, similar in form to the originals but wholly modern.
