A southern view shows the exposed concrete foundation and entrance bridge. “As you approach and enter, the front door is at the top,” explains Sokol. “It’s a three-story house with the entrance on the third story, and the master bedroom in the basement—it’s sort of upside down.”

Along the front of the home, tiered landscape sections are bordered by panels of COR-TEN steel, with a central walkway and staircase leading up to the main entrance. The glassy front facade provides multiple vantage points for enjoying views of the active neighborhood.
The architect considers this the "heart of the house, where all of our valuable possessions, from books, to movies, to records, are stored," he says.
The charred-wood facade on Silping Wong and Jon Friesen’s house in western Canada was hand-done by Jon and his father. They used Douglas fir, a thick, corky wood that is local to the region.

A Simple Plan
A Marmol Radziner–designed prefab house, trucked onto a remote Northern California site, takes the pain out of the construction process.
Klopf Architecture's modest 72-square-foot addition at the front of the home blends in with the original structure while giving the owners a greater sense of openness in the master and hall bathrooms. Inside, the re-imagined great room now features dining space.
The bi-level car barn, a spare, timber-clad structure with an A-frame roof, nods to traditional farmhouses, but is “sleek and contemporary in spirit,” says Geremia. Inspired by an old photo of a porcelain farmhouse sink, it features polished concrete floors.

Estúdio Penha introduced floor-to-ceiling, iron-framed picture windows that fill this home with light.
After passing through the wooden opening, guests enter the home via a glass-encased hallway.
The second-floor terrace forms a partial covering for the deck below it.
"The entrance is a stair that goes through the building, taking you to the entrance on the front side," says the firm. "The entrance sequence marks a transition and prepares you for the life on the island."
A glass-walled balcony sits directly above the concrete terrace.
A string of glass hallways connect the four pavilions, bringing a slice of the great outdoors inside.
Giant oak trees dominate, and offer coveted shade, in the courtyard.
"The design intent was to calm down the geometry of the house," says Blue Truck Studio’s Peter Liang of the renovation.
Located on the Blaeberry River near Golden, British Columbia, this glass cabin was designed by Form and Forest.
The concrete slab roof was made from precast panel forms. "The main roof is also a roof garden completely free from infrastructures such as water tanks and solar panels, which are then located at the rear of the plot, taking advantage of its sloped section," says the firm.
The backyard is one of this home’s best features. With a lot that nearly equals the square footage of the home itself, there was plenty of room to play with landscaping.
