One of the home’s water features adorns a space between the bedrooms and main home. "We treat all the water from the house to clean them for irrigating the rest of the house," relates Elizarraras.

The original bedroom—now a guest room—features modern ceiling fans that offer a hint of the contemporary design to come in the addition, while the restored shiplap timber walls speak of the home’s heritage.

The bathroom is entirely white cement waterproof plaster with natural concrete on the floor, and a hand-poured concrete sink.

Local furniture maker Nick Tretiak created a custom kitchen table and bench, over which hangs a Noguchi paper lantern. The team wanted to keep the cabinetry as light as possible, designing white oak cabinets that read more as furniture.

Bosch’s Benchmark single wall oven delivers high performance in compact form and features elegant touch control. Over the induction cooktop, the 500 Series hood’s charcoal filter absorbs odors—which is key in small spaces—and its blower can be automated. The hidden hinge and reversible doors of Bosch’s 800 Series freestanding refrigerator allow for next-to-wall placement and nearly flush installation. The 300 Series compact washer/dryer is streamlined yet still handles full-size loads.
This kitchen’s industrial vibe is enhanced by Bosch’s classic 800 Series gas range, which features continuous grate design—for easy maneuvering of heavy pots and pans—and a soft-close oven door. The stainless-steel 800 Series refrigerator has French doors with generous pulls, and its bottom freezer is extra roomy. The minimalist, Energy Star–rated 800 Series dishwasher blends in nicely and is among the quietest models on the market.
Light oak panels by Finsa clad both the kitchen cabinetry and the built-in units that appear in the living room and entryway. "We used natural materials where we could, but we were also mindful of keeping high-touch surfaces durable," explains Anne-Marie Armstrong, co-principal of AAmp Studio.
In the kitchen, a concrete Caesarstone countertop echoes the flooring material; the slatted pine mezzanine is a nod to the ceiling finish. “Everything is referencing something else,” says Armstrong.
Honed Caesarstone Calacatta Nuvo wraps the new island and tops the white cabinets. A wall of tall storage now occupies the former eating area—including an appliance garage with a roll-up door for hiding clutter.
The firm preserved many key features of the 1,100-square-foot loft, including the beautifully textured ceiling.
