The home, clad in natural Australian timber, enjoys a sense of lightness thanks to slender columns that let it float over the dunes. The driveway and entry, at the rear of the building, have an understated design to build to the interior's magnificent ocean views. Firm director Phil Snowdon explains, “By creating an architectural form that draws your eye and leads you up the steep driveway, we could engage new visitors in a welcoming process that first reveals the object and then slowly reveals the main event, being the view."

The 1,800-square-foot home features a cantilevered design and diagonal cladding similar to that of Breuer’s own 1947 Connecticut residence. Hufft replaced the roof but maintained its flat profile—though finding the correct two-inch metal flashing was a challenge. “These are the details that make the original what I consider a masterpiece,” Hufft says.

Marquetry is a minimal side table by Manchester-based designers David Winter and Natasha Kurth. The table’s intention is to change our perceptions of material value, workmanship and artistic impression. The piece is influenced by Junichiro Tanizaki’s essay In Praise of Shadows, in which the comparisons of light and darkness are used portray contrasts between Western and Asian cultures. The surface effect is created using inlaid wooden veneer (marquetry) inspired by the tonal variations in graphite. The single-color veneer creates subtle tonal changes as the viewer interacts with the work. Light and darkness become equally important to the visual experience. The design also sources inspiration from Leonard Koren’s writing on Japanese aesthetics. The precision machine turned graphite legs trace their life path, revealing the impermanent and transient nature of materials and objects in our world.

Hanging Out is a minimal collection created by Australia-based designersDaniel Emma for COS. The installation involves showcasing the simple white shirt, and features three furniture pieces from the designers’ home collection. Narin Chair is a minimal chair created by England-based designer David Irwin. The elegant design features a smooth sweeping transition from the turned oak legs into the formed backrest, which also doubles as the mount for the pivot from where the back leg rotates. The seat and back are formed from layered birch ply with an oak veneer with an oiled finish and stainless steel fixings. The fixings contained on the underside of the chair slide along the grooves within the back legs to present a graceful silhouette with clean flowing lines, which looks as good folded away for storage as it does when open and in use.
