In the aftermath of a 2005 earthquake in Pakistan, Lari develeoped a bamboo shelter system called KaravanRoof, built with adobe-and-mud walls and strong bamboo cross-bracing.
The house features several courtyards, conveying an ever-present sense of indoor-outdoor living. Concrete walls are lined with yellow jasmine, and the wall sculpture is taken from Manuel Felguérez’s fence for the National Anthropology Museum.
The sculpture on the wall is by artist Peter Dudek, a friend of the family, and the pendants are by Glashütte Limburg. Baumann made a point to integrate industrial materials throughout, exposing steel beams and setting the floor in concrete.

To contrast the billowy tufts, Cochran inserted blue-toned agave. “Drought-tolerant and hardy enough to handle the intensive sun exposure of this location, both of these plants are regionally appropriate,” says Cochran. “California is in the midst of a drought; we need to consider water-conserving plants.”
The black framework separating the kitchen and dining area was meant to echo the exterior cladding. Additional black details give the space a grounding geometry.
The result is a multipurpose living area that opens up to an exterior courtyard anchored by a Ross Gardam Flint table.
Two angled columns emerge from the kitchen, one of many ways Nest used geometry to divide the space without obstructing views. The architects intentionally opted for oblique angles that would provide a variety of different views depending on the angle.
