"Around the time we were thinking of moving back [to San Francisco], I took a trip to Marfa, Texas, and fell in love with the agelessness of Donald Judd’s work," says Amy. Walking down the stalls of the Asia Now exhibit, I came across a wealth of canny design from across the massive continent. I also loved the setup of the exhibition itself, a tour of the best of Asia organized into what feel like high-design market stalls.

Shophouses are a staple of Southeast Asian urban architecture. A team of designers including Yong Ter, Teng Wui, Andrew Lee, and Edwin Foo renovated this shophouse into a contemporary sanctuary over the course of two years. They left the roof completely open from the beginning of the original airshaft to the back of the house. The heart is a cooking/dining area with a 13-foot-long Indonesian table made from a single piece of teak.

A vibrant and eclectic 65-seater diner in Kiev, Ukraine that serves Asian street food, Kitaika designed by AKZ Architectura was inspired by street culture in Asia and Ukraine. Combining carnival-like elements, bold colors, garlands of exposed light bulbs, and eye-catching graffiti, this little diner is a surreal and delightful take on Asian dining.

Set within the East Asian community of Richmond, BC, Curio House allows two Chinese scholars—the architect’s grandparents—to age in place. "I have a very close relationship with them," says Haeccity Studio Architecture cofounder Shirley Shen, "and it was kind of a family endeavor." The resulting design integrates principles from feng shui, a set of spatial laws meant to direct energy, and siheyuan, a historical courtyard house.

Hanging plants create an atrium atmosphere in Eat & Drink, which is open for service all day. Head chef Shannon Moran is at the helm of Eat & Drink, whose seasonal menu draws from his travels through Europe, South America, and Asia. All throughout the venue, curated tunes from Reverberation Radio, a weekly podcast by Los Angeles-based band Allah-Las, adds to the alt-island vibe.
