Boom Boom by Matthieu Lehanneur for Binauric, $249 Taking an angular tack to audio electronics, Boom Boom is more akin to an objet d’art than to its brick-like brethren. It’s chargable via USB port or outlet, Bluetooth-enabled, compatible with Apple and Android systems, and works as a speakerphone.

Sound1 Bluetooth Speakers, $85 at the Dwell Store The Sound1 Speakers deliver clear, crisp stereo sound and pair with Bluetooth-enabled portable devices and computers. Embedded magnets allow speakers to be conjoined into a single piece, which can be neatly stowed away in the included pouch. When not in use, cables can be discreetly stowed at the bottom of each speaker.

Acoustic Mass speakers by Bose, 1987

These sculptural ceramic speakers by San Francisco–based product designer Joey Roth made of cork and Baltic birch not only look fantastic, but will beautifully belt out any tune.

You play music on the Pulse through the company’s app, and as you add Bluesound players, you can play through multiple speakers as you move between rooms.

Opposing magnets keep the 3/4-pound black sphere floating above the base, and the speaker unit housed inside is rechargeable—pull it from the floating base and plug it in, and a full charge gets 15 hours of playback.

Moxie Showerhead K-9245-0 2.5 by Kohler, $199 This showerhead has a built-in Bluetooth speaker that lasts for seven hours and connects to a phone up to 32 feet away, enough distance to keep devices dry. When it’s out of battery power, remove it and recharge via USB.

The BeoPlay A9 Speaker cuts an undeniably striking, almost aerodynamic, profile. It comes from the sound experts at Bang & Olufsen and connects to your devices via Apple Airplay, DLNA, or Bluetooth 4.0. It also features built-in access to Spotify Connect, Deezer, and TuneIn.

Play:3 by Sonos, $299 Most wireless speakers communicate in a format that compresses your music into a barely acceptable fuzz. Sonos, with its one-step setup, streams tunes from any device to its speakers with sonic clarity. Once you buy the connecting bridge, keep adding speakers to fill your halls with more and more tunes.

Hill included a hidden turntable and mono speaker cabinet in the original design.

The Bluetooth Sound Machine - Edison

The architect designed and made most of the furniture for the house in the workshop in his garage, including the sofa, coffee table, kitchen lights (which were water-jet cut from a single piece of aluminium), and the speaker stack, which he based on the ramshackle piles of old stereo equipment commonly found in thrift store Hi-fi Corners.

Loop by Libratone, $500 Whether mounted to a wall or stationed on its stand, the Red Dot Award–winning Loop delivers crisp, all-encompassing sound in a handsome yet compact package. The Italian-wool cover is available in eight colors. Stream tunes wirelessly from your computer or phone.

On its own, the OD-11 is both simple and visually arresting. A white cube, the speaker almost feels sculptural. The sleek styling helps to make the function of the product nearly withdraw from focus. Of course, exquisite engineering rests beneath the grille.

Bluesound plays from services including Rdio and TuneIn Radio, with Spotify recently announced. The biggest name in the home Wi-Fi audio market, Sonos, can handle more services.

Lenny Portable Speaker Make beautiful music with this Bluetooth-enabled collaboration between the British home goods retailer and the French hi-fi manufacturer.

Move L portable speaker in Mint by NudeAudio, $99 A Bluetooth speaker is a must for impromptu alfresco gatherings. This one boasts a passive subwoofer and an eight-hour battery.

The WOW Bluetooth Speaker by Antonio Arévalo for Kakkoii is USB chargeable and requires no batteries. The speaker connects wirelessly to any compatible Bluetooth device within a 33-foot radius, and its auto-play feature pauses the music when there is an incoming call, seamlessly integrating work and play.

For skipping tracks without using your phone, the Pulse has dedicated hard buttons on the top of the speaker, as well.
