British photographer Julian Broad has contributed to Vanity Fair for 25 years. He got his start with commissions for Arena and The Face magazines. Though he primarily shoots portraits,he segued into architectural photography to document the Norton Residence in London for this issue. Broad was drawn to architect William Tozer’s updated design for the kitchen, which includes “a huge window at the end—perfect for watching squirrels.” If you could add one thing to your kitchen, what would it be? “I’d quite like a kitchen designed around a bank of green Fritz Haller cabinets.”

Over a 25-year career, Margie Ruddick has creatively defied convention to pursue landscape design on her own terms.

Designed by Andrea Stemmer for SCP, the Jules Mirror is an unframed, rectangular portrait mirror that works well in a small-profile bathroom. The mirror features a solid oak storage shelf at its base, which can be used to hold small items including makeup, toiletries, or even favorite photographs and postcards. The shelf is made from a single piece of wood and is shaped like a half pipe, which counters the rigid straight lines of the mirror with a warm curvature.

"There are so many ways to approach design," Ruddick says. "I think my philosophy might be that you approach each project as you would approach raising a child: not expecting it to be like any other; (mostly) respecting given rules and making up some of your own; making sure that there is substance and rigor but also joy." She designed an indoor garden at the midtown New York Bank of America building (above).

Ruddick collaborated with the New York architect Steven Harris on a master plan for the Shillim Institute in India’s Western Ghats mountains. “It took us about ten years,” Ruddick says. “There were a lot of environmental issues that we had to deal with, and there’s this very healthy, diverse forest where we said, ‘Don’t do anything there.’ It had a big sustainability component.”

Villa by the Ocean, 2004, features a long, low profile and a green roof.

Ruddick continues to be involved with the Shillim Institute by serving on the board of the institute, which promotes sensible development.

Some of the promising young chefs recently profiled in Los Angeles magazine.

Ruddick’s design for Queens Plaza in New York helped transform a neglected space into an easily navigable gathering spot. The concrete bases beneath the benches appear to “pop up” from the ground, Ruddick says. “It required a lot of design to make everything integrate.”

“We submitted something that basically proposed to take the classical profile of these columns that exist here,” says Lukyanov, “And start to play with it and start to deform that profile.”

From the street, the house maintains a low profile, saving the architectural surprises for the inside.

The roof profile of the addition is a direct reference to the hipped roof of the main house.

The green roof, wood cladding, and low profile help to integrate the home with its lush, natural surroundings.

Though guesthouse is distinctly modern, influences of the traditional architecture of the region are evident in the profile and color.

The ribbon-like design affords the building three different gable profiles—one is symmetrical, while the other two lean in opposite directions.

Each steel profile is placed vertically upright and 14 inches apart from each other.

"Some see in the cutouts the portrait of a pirate; some, the profile of a whale," Garziano says of the residence's silhouette. "It is interesting to hear different interpretations, but they all belong to the same maritime sphere."

Built with a low profile to match the regional farm vernacular, the Red Hill Farm House stands out from its more rudimentary neighbors with an angular roofline that mimics mountainous terrain.

A higher profile designer, the Spanish designer Nacho Carbonell's Skin series is also on display at Industry Gallery.

From this perspective, the depth of each profile becomes apparent and the wall becomes much mores three-dimensional.

Chin abstracted a simple gable form—a profile which is more common in the area—to create a more contemporary asymmetrical profile.

Each home that Wright designed was unique to its circumstances, and the Penfield House was no exception. Set on 30 acres in Lake County, Ohio, the 1950 home has taller ceilings and an elongated profile to accommodate the client Louis Penfield—who was six foot eight.

Renowned designer and architect Jens Risom sourced parts from a catalog for his customized A-frame and had them delivered in pieces to his remote island site off Rhode Island, helped to raise the aesthetic profile of modular construction.

The profiles are numbered and notched on the wood jig, which holds them in place and ready for the in-between steel pieces.
