Perched atop the historic Gilsey House, the J+K Residence also overlooks a storied neighborhood. The land, located north of Madison Square, was one of New York's last remaining family farms before becoming a bustling theater district. In reference to the unembellished geometry of the addition, Dyar explains, “[Thodos] framed the pavilion in a steel structure in a subtle nod to the preferred medium of the client’s sculptural work. He resolved challenges of detailing and scale with an eye to enhancing the floating quality of the space, as experienced both by its occupants and passersby.”
In Sweden, architect Bengt Mattias Carlsson created a pavilion adjacent to a residence dating from the late 1800s. The pergola is made from glue-laminated timber beams set atop steel posts; it protects the pool from falling pine needles. George Nelson benches offer places to sit.
Abernathy House
This model, which has a wide, raised interior platform, and a sauna that’s easily accessible via a covered terrace, come in sizes of between 904-square-feet and 1,356-sqaure-feet.
The passageway leads out to a raised terrace at the back of the plot.

A section of the roof reaches over a rock outcropping—a detail that visually connects the house to the landscape and offers a handy way to climb up to the roof deck without using a ladder.
Since the front door is located in the exterior wall, residents first enter a vast garden before reaching the gable roof house.
The roof deck has a commanding view. “We have friends out here in the summer and stay too long drinking wine,” says Bradley.
The landscape was devised by Hale along with Kate Stickley of Arterra Landscape Architects.
