We debuted this story on Coolhaus, [note the pun] an LA based company founded by two architects that makes high concept ice cream sandwiches named after modern design icons, back in April of 2009 and apparently it was hot hot hot then too. I'll bet we beat the record this year.

This ultra-thin wood by Japanese brand Woodum is woven into fabric to create upholstery, pillows, placemats, and bags. The lampshades are made by fellow Japanese brand Cuiora from tightly rolled lengths of recycled paper.

This adaptive reuse project in San Antonio transformed an early-20th–century warehouse into a lively design studio. Its open floor plan provides long-term flexibility for future users, while 1,200 square feet of roof space was removed to create a new courtyard while maintaining the original facade.

Signs with green tips speckle the store, like this one about reusable lunch bags that sits next to fabric sandwich bags and lunch totes by Graze Organic and Rebel Green.

Polish-born designer Aleksandra Gaca created these next-level bean bag chairs, which she calls Slumber Poufs, out of woven, three-dimensional fabrics including Kid Mohair and merino wool.

From Germany’s Pavilion: The Germany Pavilion focuses its impeccable Reduce/Reuse/Recycle installation on recent works in Germany that share a particular approach to Architecture as a Resource in times of austerity. It is a modest but intelligent intervention that invites us to rethink the concept of green architecture and the appreciation and care of relatively recent built heritage. A simple, clear and didactic installation, which is some relief in a biennial sometimes crowded by unprofitable information.

All the editors loved the Tools for Everyday Life booth, featuring products by designers-in-residence at Northumbria University in the UK (in fact, they snagged the best-in-show Accessories prize). The One Ton Bag shown here is Danny Duquemin-Sheil's thesis project; each one is made from recycled delivery sacks used to haul construction materials, i.e., extremely durable.

The second staircase is skinnier and sandwiched between the bed and window.

Interlocking composite sandwich panels hold the two halves together. The panels have an added styrofoam layer for sound and thermal insulation.

“The circulation areas are more than just ways to get places, but spaces you actually want to be and hang out in,” says Eric Hass, a principal at DSH.
