With clever storage and a retractable skylight, a London apartment designed by metalworker and owner Simone ten Hompel and Roger Hynam of Rogeroger Design Solutions feels larger than its 576 square feet. The team worked in a uniquely collaborative way, with Ullmayer Sylvester planning the space, Hynam creating the built-in storage and the kitchen island, and ten Hompel making models and scrawling on the wall to better envision their proposals. The kitchen island features a compact cooktop by Whirlpool and an integrated drainboard incised into the countertop for easy cleaning.

The living room and dining room were originally separated by a central fireplace, which interior designer Nicole Hollis removed to create this great room. She installed a modern, custom eight-foot-long open gas fireplace in the living room, equipped with sensors that automatically turn it off when someone gets too near to the flames.

24-inch-wide gas cooktop by Haier, $900 This scaled-down cooktop—which features four gas burners offering a range of BTU levels—is part of Haier’s collection of appliances focused on small spaces and urban living.

Induction cooktops, growing steadily in popularity due to their energy efficiency and speed, are part of the offering as well as as a selection of exhaust hoods.

For the sink area, Serra specified American Standard's Orchard Apron sink in white. The faucet, also by American Standard, is the pull-down Fresno Culinary model. Muuto's Fluid pendant light is suspended from the ceiling.

For the kitchen, architect Ivan Priatman selected an oven, hood, and cooktop from Teka and a Samsung refrigerator. While the table is his own design, the bar stools and chairs are from Informa.

José Roberto, who says his family is always cooking something, prepares a snack with Jimena on the Ariston gas cooktop installed on the custom table.

The countertop is a solid aluminum plate. The cooktop, hood, and dishwasher are Miele.

"I wanted to preserve the canopy, the sales space, the garage door, everything," Judin tells FvF. "It wasn’t until later that I realized there was also still space for a garden."

In the kitchen, which faces west to capture views of the San Jacinto Mountains, a large red work by James Jensen punctuates one wall. The induction cooktop is from Gaggenau; the sinks were sourced from Blanco.

Judin was fascinated by the abandoned gas station ever since he first discovered it in 1992. At the time, it had been unused for seven years. He finally purchased it in 2005 and transformed it into a one-of-a-kind residence.

The stairs are one of the best parts of the renovation and were assembled on-site, stretching from basement to the top floor.

The refrigerator is by Jenn-Air, and the oven cooktop and dishwasher are by Thermador.

The Premaydena House by Misho+Associates was designed as a "box within a box," in which two interior structures—an open-plan living space and two en suite bedrooms—sit within an exterior envelope. Inspired by the region’s fiery orange lichen and the indigenous waratah shrub’s bright flowers, the colorful exterior panels are made of heavy-duty galvanized steel to guard from Tasmanian winds, which can reach up to 60 miles per hour.

The kitchen is outfitted with a built-in refrigerator by Norcool and an AEG cooktop and oven.

"When I was furnishing the place, I made sure it’d also be a good place for art," Judin tells FvF. "After that, I considered my other passions: cooking, for example. My kitchen is the heart and center of the house."

While larger ranges and appliances are still common, Hottenroth says the fully integrated look—including the induction cooktop—is becoming a popular alternative.

The Miele Induction Cooktop combines convenient features, like an expanded cook zone, with smart kitchen functionality. Using Con@ctivity 2.0 technology, it can communicate with applicable Miele ventilation hoods to turn on-and-off in sync.

In the living area, a Tufty-Time sofa by Patricia Urquiola for B&B Italia, a Soft Grid blanket by Established & Sons, and a wood-burning stove by Stûv keep her comfortable.

“Skylights were introduced throughout the home to increase light without decreasing privacy,” Montalba said. A Bosch 36-inch, five-burner gas cooktop and a Miele refrigerator add a stainless steel contrast to the kitchen’s white aesthetic.

Ryan McLaughlin watches the sunset from the deck of the 160-square-foot tiny home he built, with no prior experience, at his parents’ horse ranch in Georgetown, Texas. "The effect of the plantings on the terrace is enormous,” reflects the couple. “Not only do the branches and formations give a sense of the four seasons, but the way it looks from the living room contributes to a sense of calmness. It gives the illusion that we are viewing art."
