Binst Architects Completes U-Flats & Trinity in Machelen: Two Iconic Hotel Volumes for International Travelers
Binst Architects has completed two new-build hotels in Machelen, each combining a unique identity with a refined architectural synergy. The projects, Trinity and U-Flats, encompass a total of 368 rooms and are home to two leading hotel chains: Holiday Inn Express and Adagio Aparthotels. These new buildings form a strong urban ensemble that responds to the growing demand for flexible accommodation solutions for both short- and mid-term stays, with an underground parking facility that maximizes accessibility.
Trinity: Vertical Dynamics with a Distinctive Character
The westward-facing Trinity, operated by Holiday Inn Express, manifests as a three-pronged, 9-story volume characterized by a striking, all-around grid façade. This sleek, rigid pattern is accentuated by recessed window frames and subtle relief details in the façade, giving the building a layered expression. The varying window positions across the floors create a lively and dynamic appearance, endowing the façade with a unique identity. Trinity houses 208 hotel rooms, while the ground floor accommodates supporting functions, including a restaurant offering warm meals for a pleasant culinary experience.
U-Flats: Elegant Horizontality and Long-Term Hospitality
U-Flats, situated on the eastern side of the site and operated by Adagio Aparthotels, offers 160 rooms specially designed for guests seeking longer stays. Each room is equipped with a kitchenette, providing guests the freedom to prepare their own meals. The architectural expression of the 7-story U-Flats contrasts sharply with Trinity’s verticality. The horizontal articulation of the façade, accentuated by dark bands, creates a serene and welcoming atmosphere. Between these lines, large glass panels and concrete façade elements with a refined relief play with light and shadow, giving the building the appearance of a gracefully draped veil. This delicate detailing, combined with warm color tones, makes U-Flats a visually appealing and hospitable addition to the urban context.
Architecture as a Social Catalyst
Both buildings embody not only the ambition to deliver architectural quality but also contribute to the urban fabric of Machelen by offering international travelers a comfortable and flexible stay. According to Luc Binst, the responsibility of architects extends beyond aesthetics; it involves creating spaces that enhance societal well-being. “In a world where mobility and flexibility are becoming increasingly important, we aim to provide a solution with Trinity and U-Flats that not only excels architecturally but is also socially relevant. These projects make a valuable contribution to the region’s hospitality economy and strengthen Machelen’s appeal as a hub for international travelers.”
