Situated near Lake Merritt and the Grand Lake Neighborhood of Oakland, we worked with the clients to reconfigure the layout of the main kitchen, dining and living room space to open up the interior flow of the spaces and create a seamless indoor/outdoor way of life. We added expansive sliding doors on the ground floor main living space to open up the home's relationship to the backyard, and bring in more natural light.

Given how close the neighboring house is, we liked how the existing footprint tucked in a bit at the kitchen to maintain privacy. To handle this condition, we incorporated an open-corner folding door to make the space feel that much bigger and connected to an outdoor dining area and the yard beyond. We added a new fireplace at the corner where the new sliding doors meet, in order to orient the living room towards the yard as well.

While we aimed for the space to feel minimal and modern, we also wanted to embrace the existing home's Spanish-style influence. To achieve a balance we incorporated new ceiling beams and a floor tile that was modern in shape but had variation in the glaze at the kitchen/dining/living room space, and new archways at the entry.

A new mud room entry with a powder room was introduced just on the other side of the living room on the ground floor. At the entry stairs, we designed new beams at the second floor ceiling and a new skylight to lighten this space. Additionally, on the second floor we converted an existing roof into a roof deck off of an existing office and added a new laundry space that's accessed from the main hall. New finishes and lighting fixtures were incorporated throughout the rest of the home.
