Travis Heights Residence

This residence, originally built in 1889 and known as The Yarrington House, evolved with numerous additions made over many decades. By the late 90’s, the house had been divided into a four-plex and was part Victorian, part Greek Revival, part rustic farmhouse. Recognizing its great potential, the current owners bought the home in 1999 in its then neglected condition and worked with Clayton Korte to make careful additions and subtractions for an overall renovation.

Major changes included a new front portico and two-level, east-west gable-roofed addition created in style referential to original house, structural stabilization, restoration of the third level balcony at turret, the removal of 12 layers of composition shingles and installation of a wood shingle roof to match the original. A new separate structure serves as an art studio and garden tool storage. From the owner (herself the interior designer): “My main goal was to maintain the house’s charm and original materials while making it a practical family space and a reflection of me … It is a joy to live in a house that has its own story and history—to be a steward of something that has nothing to do with me—yet feels so entirely mine at the same time.”
