Mid-century modern inspired, passive solar home. A unique post and beam construction system was developed for this house, which features exposed radiata pine plywood walls, ceilings, and floors. In addition, an energy-efficient envelope was created using continuous insulation over two layers of DensGlass sheathing and triple-glazed windows.
Roof overhangs were calculated to maximize winter sunlight while fully shading from the summer sun. And opaque ventilators are strategically placed to naturally cool the home.
The compact interior was designed to be as flexible as possible with the use of freestanding cabinets and sliding doors instead of fixed partition walls. Further efficiency of construction was achieved by limiting drywall and trim work, exposing the structure's quality.
As a design feature, the double wythe CMU wall extends from inside to outside, creating a sense of spaciousness and connecting the living area with the generous outdoor patio. The wall also acts as a sun catcher and adds thermal mass.
At around $300 per sq. ft., the modest budget was met for a cost on par with standard construction.
