The Weinman Residence is a passive solar house consisting of three pavilions linked by narrow fully glazed passages. The palette of concrete, steel, heavy timber & glass provides a robust and fire-proof sanctuary sheltered from the severe winter storms and intense summer sun in this mountain redoubt at 8400' in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Yet the expansive glazing, connects the interior spaces to this spectacular landscape.
Fully insulated double withe concrete walls at the end of each pavilion provide privacy separation from the public spaces and adjacent roadway, while carrying the language of exterior materials inside to further blend inside and out.
A delicate black box of fine cabinetry enclosing the pantry, powder room & kitchen appliances, and hiding the stairs to the garage below, stands freely in the open expanse provided by the free spanning timbers.
