Description:
A Diamond in the Rough - Our Pandemic Project. Just prior to the global pandemic, my husband and I moved into our dream home in the trees, 90 mins from Los Angeles (Santa Monica, Marina Del Rey).
The property had so much potential from the beginning. Good bones, so much light, high (20ft) ceilings and surrounded by pine trees! 4 bed, 2 bath. A dream house. Having not been touched since the 80's, she just needed a good face lift and a little love.
We wanted our end result to feel minimalist and modern with a cosy atmosphere. We love to entertain and planned our design around making the most of the space. Upstairs hosts an open kitchen\Living\Dining experience and downstairs our master bedroom split cinema room and kitchenette with an adjacent Japanese onsen inspired master bath.
My husband and I work in the film industry and to our dismay we found our selves without our regular work schedules. Fortunately we had made an offer on this house in November 2019, after a camping trip where we discovered this off the map, quaint little gem of a town called Pine Mountain Club.
We moved in swiftly come Feb 1st 2020 and with not much else to do, we got to work! First demolishing the kitchen to install a beautiful open concept for social hangouts and intimate dinners. We love to host and this open plan kitchen / living gives our guests space to hangout at the kitchen bar and watch the chef (my husband) or relax by the fire in the living room.
Functionality at the forefront of our upgrades, and unique design aspirations, each room has its own story.
The majority of the furniture and fixtures are custom made by my husband. We also have our own art on the walls, as well as pieces by inspirational artists.
The house has a private independent entrance on the 1st floor. Plenty of outdoor living off three decks over the two levels of the house as well as the sunken garden at the front of the house.
Inside we enjoy open concept living with 20ft ceilings, floor to ceiling windows of eastern, northern and western views of the mountains.
We receive the most stunning morning sunrise that floods the main interior space with light and color and on the colder days, we cosy up in the snowfall of winter and get warm by the two pellet stoves and in-floor heating.
The downstairs had not been really used for years and had an old school wooden bar that ate into the space and a massive master bathroom that housed a gigantic non functional black hot tub. It all had to come out. Phase two, we demolished the downstairs.
We decided to make this space our master bed and bath. Dividing the master bedroom with a feature partition wall to house a cinema room.
The master bathroom was inspired by a trip to Japan, we created an onsen spa feel with an open rainfall shower, large egg shaped tub and infrared sauna.
Each of the Bedrooms are unique:
- Master bedroom - includes kitchenette. Adjacent to the master bath and cinema room with a large south facing deck.
- 2nd bedroom - "Writers Room" - west facing with a small deck on the main level, includes a queen bed and a built-in office desk.
- 3rd bedroom - "Attic Room" includes a queen bed and terrific views among treetops.
- Office space with 20ft ceilings, apple screens, and a library of books. This room also includes a sofa bed for two additional guests.
We had thought this renovation project would take us around three years but ended up taking one and now we have completely remodelled our dream home. We feel fortunate to have had the time in 2020 to make this all happen.
With the borders now opening up, we decided to open our beautiful home to share with like-minded folks through Airbnb.
