Lucky for us, many of our friends have trade skills and businesses. One of these is Ben Cinatl of Cinatl Constructions who build these custom concrete steps for us. We wanted them to appear somewhat floating, and have them built at slightly different levels and positions to create an organic feel.

One of the design elements we spent the most time on, believe it or not, was the custom pivot timber entrance door. We choose everything from the width and depth of the grooves to the exact colour of the stain. It took many people to install it, being so heavy, and it has an electric stripe which means we can enjoy the ease of keyless entry.

We have many pieces of paper where we drew up our concept for our floating entrance seat. We wanted to provide a practical spot to sit down and take off your shoes. We also added an LED strip under the seat which looks really effective at night.

We wanted to make a statement from the very start - and highlight the light and space in the home. The void, skylights and extra wide entrance really achieve this! The pendants (the same in both homes) took almost all day to hang - ensuring the exact placement and level of each was perfect as per our vision!

Being a large kitchen space, we were able to easily fit in a three-metre long bench. After moving out of a small apartment into this home, it feels extra luxe!

Unable to find a solid timber dining table to the size and design we liked, we found a local furniture maker who built this table for us off my design.

We are able to fit two, three-seater couches in the space - which we have fitted together to create one extra spacious sofa: perfect for hosting friends and family!

We love our double-shower in our Master ensuite. There is lots of natural light in the bathroom, with a large window and a skylight above the shower.

My fiance, Koden (with a background in property finance), our good friend Jake (a qualified electrician), and myself, Emily Osmond, (I have a background in marketing and I am a big interiors lover) teamed up to create two modern, luxe family homes 9km North-East of central Melbourne in Australia.

Our vision was to break away from the traditional townhouse mould and create true family homes that were spacious, light-filled and had architectural appeal.

With a contemporary aesthetic, touches of tech for added comfort and designer fixtures and finishes, the end result is two homes we're proud to call our own!

Creating these two homes with a friend made this project extra rewarding. We could share the challenges and laughs along the way - and now we are next door neighbours!
