Our objective was to not only design and build a functioning yard shed, but to create a breathtaking modern design that we will enjoy for years and that would help inspire us to continue to create other imaginative spaces. It started with a need to regain the use of our garage (yes, that is a motorcycle in the corner window!) and evolved into an expression of everything we’ve loved about simple modern design through Dwell. The structure is 10 X 12 feet with standard 2X4 wood framing and a sloped flat shingle roof. The exterior is a combination of leftover porcelain floor tiles and pine wood battens fashioned from surplus flooring and nailed over stained plywood repurposed from an old playhouse. The large windows are inexpensive shower door panes laid into wood frames custom built to fit the glass. The doors are fashioned out of the same shower doors, flooring and plywood recovered from other projects we’ve done at a small fraction of the cost of purchasing new doors. The deck frame was also built from left over lumber with only the floorboards purchased new. One section of the deck is hinged and drops to ground level to load a riding mower and other heavy loads. Although this started as just a shed, it has become our go to place to enjoy the sunset, drink some fine red wine and warm our feet by the wood fire.
