When Simone Elderot got the call for a new project in Miami, the New York-based interior designer with a Swedish heritage, was already on a research trip to Stockholm. “I was Surrounded by the magic of the contemporary, urban appeal, with a closeness to nature —so many arches and architecture of different natural materials—inspiration was not difficult to come by,” Simone says.
The owners of the residence, a New York City-based couple, fittingly requested the lavish use of white tones—particularly in natural materials. The client was especially familiar with designs, interior designs in particular, but always remained open-minded, and the designer set about acquiring pieces from local and online stores.
The two-story living room is the house’s centerpiece; extending from the main floor to the second floor, the matching furniture makes it look like a one or two-story room, yet, it can be experienced from both floors of the house. Standing in the mezzanine that overlooks the kitchen-dining and the living area, “it is really the centerpiece since standing here, in the middle of the house, you can view the entire house, front and back”, Simone explains. The house can be exited from the front and the back, the front door takes you right outside to the front yard, surrounded by feet-high banana plants, the back has a gorgeous area, with growing passion fruit vines that soon will cover the walls of the rear garden.
Contrary to the atmosphere of many Miami homes, this one manages to be homey, relaxed, and welcoming, at the same time giving a vibe that makes you long for the beach. Bringing a sense of grandeur to an otherwise minimalist shell that presented an incredibly clean slate, the sprawling space started off with brown notes throughout - “But that also meant it was neutral. My clients are neutral people, Simone says “yet this vibrant couple was open to new ideas, hence we needed to add eclecticism to poke their interest.”
A core element of the design was establishing an eclectic, grandeur beach house, Which Simone expressed by creating a fully white color scheme, with boucle-coated CB2 dining chairs and a bench, with rounded corners, throughout the living area. The theme continues to the top floor, with a pumpkin chair from Ligne Roset, the effect is mesmerizing and suitably sultry at once. The end result strongly relays the love of art and the color white—for the owners and for Simone. The Piumotto bed, from Pianca, looks like a massive pillow and fills out up the rest of the bedroom.
