RWO Residence is a renovation of a pre-war co-op in the heart of Downtown Brooklyn. Combining two adjacent units, the 2,000 square-foot home features two bedrooms, three full bathrooms, an open dining/kitchen layout, and a flexible study/guest room. The modern renovation speaks to the changing demographics of the neighborhood and leads the charge as one of the most extensive renovations in the building completed to date.
The owners were looking to create a modern, but warm atmosphere that took advantage of the extensive facade of east facing windows. While they desired an open concept, it was also necessary to incorporate quiet areas for their studies. thread collective’s resulting design balances minimalistic and modern details to create an inviting, yet serene environment.
Drawing inspiration from the versatility of asian tea houses, thread collective integrated sliding doors into the design, allowing for the option to close off various spaces while maintaining an open flow throughout the home. At the focal-point of the space is an expansive 50-foot line of east facing windows, maximizing natural daylight throughout. Continuing the tea house-inspired aesthetic, warm, natural rift white oak was used on horizontal and vertical surfaces throughout the apartment to unify and emphasize minimalistic design elements. To break up the natural wood tones, rich Celestine blue millwork wraps around the study and through to the kitchen. Adjacent to the open kitchen-dining area, the sitting room features mid-century modern furnishings with dark, walnut tones, creating contrast with the with the lighter oak tone. Striking a balance between simplicity and detail, thread collective maintained a simple palette throughout the space while playing with texture, grain, and accents
