There is a natural knoll that crests above the fields of native wild grasses. This was the perfect place for the house to perch: with a view to the woods and creek beyond.

The kitchen is an abstract composition in itself with the owner's favorite shade of deep red, stretch hex backsplash tile and floating shelves. Natural maple cabinets blend well with the cork floor.

A tiny courtyard painted in the owners' favorite color: aqua. This little space will serve the dog and cat she intends to adopt in the future.

One of the ways we achieve net zero is with high performance triple glazed passive house windows from Eurostar Fenestration. The operable windows are tilt/turn, a feature that is more common in Europe but becoming more popular in the US. A small wood stove anchors the corner.

The main space includes a kitchen, dining and living area - all with southern views toward the forest and neighboring creek. The deep overhangs outside shield the interior from heat in the summer while letting in warming sun in the cold months.

There's a lot of talk about "modern farmhouses", but what makes a farmhouse "modern"? We think it's sustainability and a sensitivity to both the client and the site. We designed this net zero house to be a base for the Owner to grow her little farmstead. She is a tech worker who moved from Northern California to North Carolina. She wanted land for her horse and room to breathe. She found a site that had been formerly logged for timber, but native grasses and trees had grown back. The site was deep so we could locate the house far in, for both privacy and views of the surrounding forests and the neighboring creek. The house was designed also with a small courtyard for the owner's future dogs and cats to enjoy without going into the fields where coyotes could be a danger. The house, being remote, has a sprinkler system. Photos by Tzu Chen Photography.
