This project entailed the renovation of a family home for a young couple and their son. The couple is very involved in the arts world. One of them is a sculptor for whom we converted the existing rear garage into an artist/ sculpture studio, complete with heat and air conditioning. We also added new folding glass doors and a new roof for the studio. For their home, we renovated the entire house, coming up with a new layout, new rear addition and a roof deck. Large picture windows were installed on two sides of the building addition flooding the family dining room with light.

The project was a delicate balance between old and new. We restored the existing cantilevered window bay to fit into the historic fabric with the neighboring buildings, and installed new energy efficient windows. Existing stained glass windows were carefully restored and reinstalled while existing floor joists were cut, planed and reused to build a new staircase. The stair railing was designed and built using hot rolled steel that was treated for corrosion, but otherwise unfinished (not blackened), as the owners wanted a natural industrial look, including any marks and signs from the steel factory. Metal mesh panels doubled as a safety feature and a delightful backdrop for hanging art, plants etc. The owners opted for modern interiors and architectural details (such as reveals at bases, crowns & casings rather than traditional wood moldings). The kitchen was designed by Ben Herzog Architect (BHA) and built by Henrybuilt.
