A 1993 kitchen was in desperate need of an update. Kids in high school who someday hoped to attend college, so budget was limited. Two design-build firms had failed. Found a tile guy willing to be the general contractor for a kitchen for the first time. Choices were made with practicality and quality as the main criteria. Tried and true layout remained the same, with slight adjustments to cabinets. All surfaces, fixtures, and appliances are new, floor was refinished.
Chose contrasting cabinet paint and countertops for the island. All surfaces neutral to allow natural beauty from windows to shine. Island cabinet paint color changes from grey to blue to green depending on light.
Vegetable sink in island keeps food prep separate from dish sink near dishwasher. High section of island serves as small bar, and a place to keep snacks and fruit bowl. Faucet is accessible from both sides of island. The small open shelf is a strong support for the overhanging counter, and is great for wine display.
This kitchen is the perfect size and layout. There is enough counter and storage space, but all the work centers are handy to each other.
The island contains two large drawers for small appliances. More deep drawers on the refrigerator wall hold pots and pans.
The microwave was placed in the hole in the angled corner. It is off the counter, but still easier to reach than if it was above the cooktop. The angled corner has incredibly deep drawers. We love this way of optimizing a corner!
Backsplash reaches from countertop to ceiling. Square lighter grey tiles complement the glass block, rectangular shiny darker tiles add interest and symbolize the rains of Oregon.
Design: homeowners, general contractor and tile: Tom Habelt, cabinets: custom, countertops: Cambria quartz, sinks: Blanco, range: JennAir induction
Honestly, if I had it to do over I wouldn't change a thing! I hope some of our successes can be shared for others to enjoy in their kitchens!
