Portrait in Concrete: A multi-generational residence in the heart of Delhi

This extremely compact house, nestled inside the dense fabric of South Ex, was created to meet the needs of three generations. The south facing corner pot surrounded by clumsy neighborhoods has to be designed carefully to ensure privacy without compromising light and ventilation. In its purest form, this house is an introvert who is continually playing “Hide and Seek”. Hide the views, seek the light.

The entire composition is dependent on the small plot size of 22x6 meters and relies on the concrete cuboid that crowns it to define its distinctive character. The depth and volumes inside the house are a result of careful consideration of proportions, despite the challenging linear plot. The linear plot is in two parts of private living spaces connected by common areas. The triple-height volume at the center of the house connects the three generations while also providing cozy specs for each family member.

The most crucial aspect of constructing such a modest house was providing massive open rooms without sacrificing necessary places. The Italian marble complemented with the red terracotta wall, from the ground to the second floor transforms into wooden folds that bring warmth along with lightness to the space. The formal space on the third floor is where the clients enjoy entertaining and hosting their visitors. Only on this floor is where the linearity of the pot can be seen with open flowing spaces for dining and living.

Right behind the formal living room is a spacious balcony for socializing with a 7 feet high parapet above which one can only see the mesmerizing sky. A split staircase connects the formal living to the terrace that houses an 8-meter-long lap pool, private home theater, and a garden with complete privacy and a perfect space for stargazing!
