Extensive renovations to a townhouse in the Fairmount section of Philadelphia included reconfiguration of interior spaces throughout, as well as a family room addition that joins the dwelling to the defining feature of the site - a 200-foot long walled garden. Natural wood finishes feature prominently in the addition, which terminates with a large steel window that dramatically connects house and garden. The home's original kitchen and dining spaces were re-ordered to create unobstructed sight-lines, making this window a focal point upon entering the home and creating a strong visual link to the garden. Accents of vibrant green, golden yellow and earthy brown were selected for the new kitchen, referencing shades seen in the garden beyond. Custom wood cabinetry along the party wall transitions from kitchen storage to work space to media center, minimizing the need for wall cabinets and furniture, and allowing the narrow townhouse spaces to feel airy and open.
