A central Milan 2 story penthouse was refurbished as a crisp and fresh retreat for an international couple. While appreciating the stately building facade and period details like the curved ceiling and tall wood-framed windows, the couple also sought a minimal and contemporary space. Both floors boast 12 foot high ceilings; the first floor consists of 30 cm concrete beams that travel the length of the open space; the second floor ceiling is pitched and converted to include a partial loft accompanied by a floor to ceiling bookshelf. A sculptural staircase is the standout piece that adjoins the 2 floors (personal elevator included, however). Its serpentine form was carefully manipulated to accommodate a tight space and high ceilings. Spacious and calming kitchen and baths round out the home. Tiles & fixtures are all of Made in Italy brands (Mutina, Marazzi, Neve) in addition to the use of natural travertine stone.
