Reviving Ethnic Charm with Modern Minimalism in Mumbai’s Industrial Core
Merchant 13, an office designed by Studio Jane Designs in an industrial section of Worli, Mumbai, blends modern functionality with sophisticated Indian ethnic touches. Spanning 1,400 sq ft, the interior optimises circulation within a narrow space while integrating functional areas like a sales cabin, staff seating, a common room, and washrooms. The design called for an ethnic Indian theme, fusing traditional elements with modern minimalist styles, enhancing aesthetics and functionality.

The project holds special significance for both the design team and the client. During their initial discussion at Fab Cafe, they discovered a deep, mutual appreciation for Indian aesthetic themes. This shared passion became the foundation of their design collaboration, ensuring that every material and detail reflected the cultural heritage they both valued. Their unified vision shaped the entire space, balancing tradition with modernity to create a cohesive, meaningful design. This connection profoundly influenced the design choices, focusing on infusing the space with traditional charm while maintaining a contemporary aesthetic. The team carefully adapted the design to accommodate the constraints of the older building; this included maximising space efficiency and ensuring seamless circulation, all while staying true to the Indian aesthetic vision that the client and the team shared.
Working in an older building in Mumbai presented several challenges. The original layout consisted of two separate units merged to create a more expansive space. However, the building’s dated infrastructure meant narrow windows and restrictive structural elements, limiting natural light, ventilation, and the ability to modify plumbing systems. Windows, originally no more than three feet tall, hindered the desired open and airy feel, blocking light and obstructing the view of the outdoors. The narrow floor plan also required creative solutions to maximise the office’s functionality and flow. The wide, heavy beams were skillfully incorporated into the overall ceiling design, transforming them into a defining feature. The team ensured the client’s desire for multiple functional rooms was met without compromising the design or flow.
The layout is meticulously designed to ensure optimal functionality and circulation. Upon entering, visitors are welcomed by a marble-clad reception area that exudes understated luxury. A striking Satvario marble console anchors the reception, blending functionality with elegance as it serves both the receptionist and a cosy waiting area. Serving as the central hub, the reception seamlessly connects different office areas. To the right, the directors’ common cabin features an ensuite washroom and sits adjacent to a small conference room. The cabin’s transparent glass partitions turn opaque at the press of a button, balancing privacy with openness. Opposite the shared cabin lies a smaller private cabin with its own independent entrance, repurposed as a fire exit to meet safety standards.
The central cubicle area, located just behind the reception, features a fourteen-seater workspace for staff. The workstations are arranged linearly along the walls to maximise space while maintaining easy movement. Behind the reception area lies the common workspace, overlooked by a separate cabin seamlessly integrated into this section. The washrooms have been strategically placed to optimise space - one common washroom is located on the left side of the entrance, while the ensuite washroom is shared between the two director cabins and the third cabin. Despite the tight space, the team ensured a smooth circulation flow, accommodating staff and visitors easily.
The design embraces an Indian ethnic theme, seamlessly blended with contemporary elements to evoke a minimalist yet culturally rich ambience. An earthy colour palette - featuring shades of grey, golden, beige, browns, and whites - paired with green accents from life-sized indoor plants introduces a natural, calming touch. Materials like marble, veneer, cane, linen, and rubblestone enhance the Indian aesthetic, highlighting natural elements. Brass accents, thoughtfully placed throughout the office, infuse traditional charm, while linear lighting extending from the entrance to the staff area creates a sense of continuity and elongation within the space.
The narrow windows were cleverly redesigned to create the illusion of larger openings, with larger frames and louvred blinds in the meeting room enhancing light and ventilation. Floor-to-ceiling window frames with old Indian-inspired designs seamlessly merged tradition with modern aesthetics. Custom furniture was essential in optimising the space, tailored to fit the narrow layout while ensuring functionality. The directors’ cabins featured concealed washroom doors and storage units for a clean, uncluttered look. Custom-made lighting, suspended or recessed, was designed with removable acrylic panels for easy maintenance.
The flooring was divided into two sections: seamless flooring in common areas and marble flooring in cabin areas for added luxury. Veneer walnut finishes and flex stone wall introduced warmth and rustic charm, while wooden panelling further enhanced the design.
Merchant 13 is a striking fusion of traditional Indian elements and modern, minimalist interiors. Despite the challenges of working within an older building, the office has been transformed into a functional, luxurious, and culturally infused space. Smart spatial planning, custom-made furniture, and thoughtful design details create an environment that balances aesthetics with productivity while maintaining a cohesive Indian ethnic theme. The project’s standout feature is its creative use of space and the successful blend of cultural richness with contemporary interior design.
