Our clients, a young family in the tech industry, decided to relocate from Vancouver to the Okanagan, settling on the West Bench overlooking Penticton BC. They purchased a 1960's hillside home which had never been touched and was in desperate need of an overhaul. With a nod to mid century modern architecture, we chose to embrace the style for the interior and exterior renovation. The bones of the home were good, the hard finishes were not. We left the structure relatively alone except for a re-design of the stairs and lower laundry/mudroom area.

The current 'all wood kitchen' trend felt like a suitable direction to take as the love of walnut not only flows through the veins of mid century modern design, but mine as well. The large grain and warm brown tones add depth to the flat slab cabinet fronts with complimenting walnut pulls. Terrazzo tile was brought in from Italy to accent the dining room built in and clad the powder room floor and wall. The central fireplace remained the feature between the dining and living room and a walnut built in was added in the living room to house personal accessories and provide some storage. The entry to the primary bedroom was relocated to allow for better flow in the foyer and the ensuite saw a full overhaul adding a freestanding tub and large tiled shower. Downstairs a laundry room was crafted from the existing hallway and storage room and bedrooms were refreshed with new finishes.

The previous all wood siding covered every exterior wall so the addition of white stucco and stone added interest. Westform metal siding with a grain pattern was used for ease of maintenance but was installed vertically to create the illusion of more height on the home. An existing cracked pool was brought to life and is enjoyed by the family, with their 2 children now.
