From LDa Architecture & Interiors

A 1950’s Mid-Century Modern house originally built for the founder of Talbot’s Clothing Company had undergone a series of disjunctive additions over the years, and was in need of a new master plan. LDa was hired to create a new, whole-house program to serve a family of five while preserving the open floor plan and retro charm.

Working within the expansive - and almost rambling - first floor footprint, a great deal of study was focused on the relationship and transition between public, family, and private spaces. Two new separate second story additions were added to accommodate a kids wing and a family room with water views. A new first floor gallery space that abuts the original living room serves as the central entry and gathering space of the house, while the wings off those spaces serve more semi-private and private functions. Connections to the outdoor areas of the house include a generous porch off the kitchen and a patio accessed from the living room to take advantage of the Fredrick Law Olmstead designed landscape. The updated interior and exterior of the home now efficiently accommodates a contemporary lifestyle, while a new interior and exterior trim language unifies the house as a whole.
