The key sensibility of the addition and renovation was integration. How do we integrate old and new together to be seamless? The existing roof was extended to incorporate the addition, the existing brick painted white to match the new, the existing soffit was replaced and extended to match the new, and wall cladding accent was changed to match the new soffit.

The challenge of this project was to incorporate substantial additional space requirements into a small addition, including a new garage, workshop, office, mudroom, and third bedroom, into a small 1,200 sf shell. The solution was a tight knit floor plan which intimately weaves lots of program into the small footprint. We also had to address the old building standards within the existing house.

The addition is grafted onto the right side of the home, with each floor plate split between rooms to the front and rear to maximize room count. The addition is also on a steeply sloped site, so the new mudroom on upper main level in the rear allows new family access to the back yard, while the lower level fronts the expanded driveway to allow additional vehicular access off street.

All materials used were an extension and modification of the existing home of brick and asphalt shingle roof. By using identical brick to the existing, and staining both existing and new the same color white, the existing home was refreshed to look new like the addition, and in turn the addition looks part of the original structure. Even the old and new garage doors match to blur the line between old and new. Similar on the interior, the existing home has been opened and refreshed to allow it to feel new like the addition.
