La Croix is a stunning modern three-bedroom residence that epitomises urban minimalism. With its foundations on the steep slopes of Signal Hill in the coveted Fresnaye neighbourhood of Cape Town, its sleek, understated architecture boasts clean lines and simple shapes, seamlessly blending with its breathtaking surroundings.

The design is a fusion of boldness and elegance. Verbose on its exterior, the charcoal-covered walls contrast the off-shutter concrete, softened by glass panes reflecting lush greenery. The architecture created is both commanding and inviting. The views of Lion’s Head are framed by sturdy block forms and strategically positioned cantilevers that embrace Cape Town’s captivating landscape throughout the seasons. The forms are designed to allow the soft morning sun to penetrate the home in winter when the warmth is needed.

The interior is meticulously designed. The detailing includes hidden strip lights, floor-to-ceiling doors, and flat textures that complement the contemporary impression. The compact yet thoughtful design seamlessly integrates indoor and outdoor living with large-format glazing that floods the interior space with abundant natural light, offering uninterrupted city and ocean vistas.

The open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area connect well with an external balcony featuring a complete braai facility. It provides the ideal space for entertaining on the upper level. The private bedrooms offer a sanctuary of comfort and tranquillity. On the ground level, the outdoor spaces featuring a sizeable pool and a lemon tree courtyard garden provide a serene atmosphere away from the congested urban setting.

La Croix is a sustainably designed project that considers material selection and energy efficiency. The home benefits from a complete solar photovoltaic system that supports heat-retaining geysers and lithium-iron batteries. The project embodies a commitment to environmental responsibility.

This was the third home project for Bomax Architects with their returning client, resulting in a residence showcasing minimalist sophistication. The building’s personality, informed by conversations with the discerning client during an extensive design process, has similarities to a previous project for the client in Upper Eastwood Estate, Newlands. Built in 2009, Thorn Street was the Bomax's first off-shutter concrete house. The design is still current today and has become somewhat of a signature style for the architecture practice.

La Croix is a testament to the fundamental design principle, ‘form follows function’, offering an effortlessly liveable yet visually striking home. With its unparalleled location, meticulous design, and sustainable features, this home set a new standard for modern urban living in Cape Town.
