The glamping-inspired exterior for this casual-modern new build was designed to blend in on the densely wooded lot. So when the paint/stain question came up, the answer was so hands-down stain, we needn’t have even asked.
For the interior, the owners basically handed us the keys and said, “You drive. Let’s go somewhere fun.” So we raced off in a cozy-modern direction, with “scenic lookouts” throughout. We steered clear of the kitschy retro-camp vibe, choosing lighting and finishes that feel much more “now.” The primary suite is in a private wing, removed from the younger campers. Colors and finishes are (mostly) neutral, earthy, woody and textural, with a dash of daring. Large, exotic quartzite slabs adorn the kitchen island, bar backsplash and great room fireplace – making a bold look-at-me statement without stealing the design thunder.
Outdoor space was equally important, as the “he” of the couple is a landscape designer, who loaded the sprawling yard with mature trees and plants, so the home felt like it had been there forever. Phantom screens on the covered porch keep the summer bugs out, while the fireplace cozies it up for allllmost 4-season lounging.
