A dated three-story townhouse in Queens NY was completely transformed into a sophisticated family sanctuary for a mother and her two teenage sons. The house was designed with natural light and open space as key driver in space planning. Careful consideration was paid to each area of the home to ensure each family member had a space that would bring out their individuality.

During construction, the interior was gutted and removed inorder to expose the house’s original structure. This led to the discovery of large window openings in the brick exterior. The house’s top level, which was once a two-bedroom floor separated by a hallway, was gutted, completely removing the attic and walls. It was transformed into a continuous studio-apartment, with exposed beams and a grand seven-foot arched window. A balcony and bathroom were added on the second floor, and the first floor was left open to let in light and enlarge the common living space.

Features of the mother’s soft, effeminate style can be seen in the common spaces of the living room and kitchen. Touches of brushed gold accent a color palette of purple and beige on the first floor. A pale lavender entryway, paired with traditional furnishings, created the perfect balance between elegant timelessness and new-age inspiration. A custom fitted glass stair banister was installed, to allow for an unobstructed view of the open layout.

The top floor studio was decorated with sleek mid-century modern furnishings, and the bathroom was painted in a striking black. Alternating between elegant femininity and sophisticated modernity, this versatile house displays designs fit for each family members personal style.
