Island Modern Farm

The design concept for this new ground up home on farmland surrounds the foundational idea of the house as a place for family members of all generations to gather comfortably and for the owners to feel at home during times when it is just the two of them.

The house was designed based on view axes. The main view through the center of the house is framed by large existing Douglas fir trees and the house design “grew” outward from this central axis. From there, the house is designed in three wings. A main living area, both indoor and outdoor, was created for coming together as a family, with a guest wing and a more private wing for the owners. The wings can be used together or separately.

Outdoor showers, deep outdoor sleeping porches, the large outdoor living and dining room, and a long outdoor morning porch were all designed with the owners love of nature and connection with the land in mind. Large openings with steel windows and doors that can fold, slide or pocket to disappear blend the indoor and outdoor spaces.

Deep, covered outdoor spaces allow for their use year-round in a climate with a large amount of rain. These spaces allow the owners to enjoy an outdoor fire pit on a cool night, or a coffee on the covered porch in the rain. The materials were chosen for their timelessness and most originate in the Pacific Northwest including large cedar timber framing trusses, and cedar siding, and Columbia river basalt stone.
