Jared Brunk, Shanna Yates, Mike Nesbit: Design/Build | The 577 Compound

On a spacious corner lot in Hyde Park’s Angeles Mesa neighborhood—just five blocks from Metro’s new K Line—The 577 Compound offers two striking homes, architectural artistry, and sweeping views from the Hollywood Sign to the snowcapped San Gabriels. This design/build team, with roots in Morphosis and Thom Mayne’s own home, blends innovation and craft in a truly unique property.

At the rear, the newly built ADU serves as the main residence. It features exposed structural steel, polished concrete floors, and floor-to-ceiling glass framing dramatic vistas. A smart open floor plan connects the living, dining, and kitchen areas, with 13-foot sliding doors opening to a shared courtyard. A two-story atrium and sculptural spiral staircase add vertical drama, leading to two upstairs bedrooms and bathrooms connected by a shared porch, shaded by movable perforated metal panels. The industrial edge is softened with hardwood floors, open trusses, and ample natural light.

The original 1915 front bungalow pays homage to Craftsman heritage with a minimalist transformation reminiscent of Donald Judd in Marfa. Walls and ceilings were removed to create vaulted, open spaces. Original features like the wood-burning fireplace, hardwood floors, crystal knobs, and vintage windows were preserved, while salvaged fir from Ray Bradbury’s home and new kitchen/bath finishes bring warmth and history.

Between the homes, a central courtyard serves as a shared gathering space, with an outdoor kitchen, fire pit, and a decomposed granite pad ready for home theater or live events. New zoning permits lot division—sell the front house or embrace the communal, live/work lifestyle The 577 Compound embodies.
