Herringbone House

Inspired by a complementary appreciation for the Georgian heritage of this Blackheath terraced house and a passion for brutalist design, the project explores a unique fusion of contrasting architectural languages. The result is a sensitive yet bold extension that balances historical respect with modern innovation, creating a space that feels both timeless and distinctly contemporary.

At the heart of the design is a crisscrossing CNC-cut birch plywood ceiling structure, inspired by the geometric strength of brutalist coffered roofs but reimagined using a softer, lighter material. The exposed plywood grid serves a dual purpose: structurally supporting the roof while adding warmth and texture to the interior. Its rhythm creates a sculptural feature that defines the space, merging practicality with aesthetic intention.

Two strategically placed skylights are seamlessly integrated within the ceiling’s structural pattern, channelling natural light into the interior at key points throughout the day. These openings direct attention toward the oversized pivot window at the rear, which frames stunning views of the garden while connecting the sunken living area to the outdoors. This play of light and connection to nature was central to the project’s design ethos, ensuring a dynamic and inviting interior experience.

The crisscross motif extends beyond the interior, creating a cohesive dialogue between the inside and outside. The reclaimed brick rear façade features a herringbone pattern, subtly referencing the grid-like structure of the interior ceiling while adding visual interest and texture. This change in bond orientation celebrates the craftsmanship of traditional bricklaying while reinforcing the architectural language established within the house.

In contrast, the side extension facing the street adopts a more restrained approach. Clad in a timber screen that recalls the appearance of a discreet garden gate, it blends quietly into its Georgian surroundings, respecting the home’s historic character while introducing a modern element. This thoughtful treatment allows the extension to harmonise with the context while offering a sense of discovery upon entering the transformed interior.

By carefully balancing heritage sensitivity with bold, contemporary design, the project creates a home that embraces its past while looking firmly toward the future — an architectural dialogue where old and new coexist in thoughtful harmony.
