The project was inspired by the need to create a space that reflects the growing personality and interests of the homeowners’ ten-year-old son. The attic, spanning 95 square meters, was transformed into a multifunctional living area tailored specifically to him. The key concept was to open up the space, enhance natural light, and integrate functional zones while maintaining a sense of openness. A key color—green—was chosen based on the boy’s personal preference, appearing in the wallpaper, furniture, and bathroom tiles, reinforcing a connection to nature.
Initially, the attic felt confined due to low, straight ceilings covered with drywall. After dismantling the walls and ceiling, an unexpected amount of open space was revealed, completely changing the project’s possibilities. The challenge was to reorganize this newfound volume effectively, ensuring each area served a distinct function while maintaining an airy and inviting atmosphere. Another design challenge was maximizing storage without overwhelming the space, leading to creative solutions such as integrating a glass partition in the wardrobe to visually expand the room.
The transformation relied on strategic demolition and restructuring. The removal of the upper drywall ceiling exposed the full potential of the sloped roof, which was further enhanced by adding skylights to increase natural illumination. Custom-built shelving units were used to define spaces organically, incorporating integrated lighting for ambiance. Modular furniture, including an adaptable sectional sofa, was chosen to accommodate various activities. The selection of materials prioritized durability and practicality, with painted wood furniture, textured wallpaper, and ceramic tiles in the bathroom providing both visual appeal and longevity.
The layout was designed to balance private and communal spaces while making the most of the attic’s unique architectural features. The main zones include:
A large play area with shelving for toys and a TV zone featuring a modular sofa that adapts to different activities.
A study nook placed in the bay window under the vaulted ceiling, with a spacious desk positioned to maximize natural light.
A bedroom and TV area, subtly divided by illuminated shelving sections to create a sense of separation without enclosing the space.
A cozy hammock corner in the second bay window, designed for reading and relaxation.
A display shelf at the foot of the bed, perfect for showcasing the boy’s collected treasures from his adventures by the sea and in the mountains.
By rethinking the existing architecture and employing strategic design choices, the attic was successfully transformed into a personalized, light-filled retreat that will evolve with its young resident. The final touch will be the arrival of his beloved pet fish, making the space truly his own.
