A small lot. A tiny house. One couple with one cat. The desire was for connected urban living, but with privacy and a sense of space. So the design centers on super efficiency. The lower level was remodeled for light and connection to the outer world, a second story was added, and the entire exterior was reworked to define the whole. The principal bedroom boasts high ceilings and high windows to bring in light and take advantage of the view. While the footprint remains small, the feel of the space is big and open. The stairway connecting the ground floor to the second story is defined by a bookcase. A built-in bench with storage at the top of the stairs invites a cup of coffee and a good book; the quality of light enhanced by the window behind. The design employs a very purposeful use of high-quality natural materials, beautiful tile work in the sleek bathroom, and open wood ceilings in the principal bedroom.
